020608 Bob Evans Earnings Up Nearly 50%

Columbus, OH - Restaurant operator Bob Evans Farm Inc. said quarterly earnings rose nearly 50% on improved profitability in its restaurant and food products division.

The Columbus, Ohio-based company said net income for the fiscal fourth quarter ended April 26 was $17.5 million, or 49 cents per share, compared with $11.9 million, or 34 cents per share, a year earlier.

Bob Evans, which operates 495 restaurants and makes and distributes pork sausages, said sales at restaurants open at least a year rose 3.3% in the quarter compared with a year earlier. Such sales rose 3.2% in May.

The company said it expects to earn about 55 cents per share in the current quarter, and $2 per share for the full year fiscal 2003. The company earned $1.91 per share in fiscal 2002.
