020306 ConAgra Plant Recalls Fajita Chicken Strips for Listeria

March 2, 2002

Washington - A ConAgra Foods Inc. plant said recalled about 30,700 pounds of cooked fajita chicken strips that may be contaminated with the potentially deadly Listeria bacteria.

ConAgra subsidiary S & C Beef Processors, based in Montgomery, Alabama, recalled its Pierce-brand fajita chicken strips produced on Oct 25, 2001.

ConAgra Poultry Foodservice distributed the products to restaurants nationwide, the U.S. Agriculture Department said.

Jim Herlihy, the plant's spokesman, said there have been no reports of illness associated with the chicken products.

The Listeria bacteria can cause listeriosis, an uncommon but potentially fatal disease for people with weak immune systems, like infants and the elderly. Symptoms include high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea.

The recalled products are in 10-pound cases and marked with a package code beginning with either 4A01298 or 4B01298, followed by two digits and ending with P-19055.

This is the third recall from a ConAgra Foods plant in about a month.

Earlier this month, a ConAgra plant in Ohio recalled 408,000 pounds of Healthy Choice-brand chicken noodle soup because it neglected to inform consumers that whey protein was in the products.

And in late January a ConAgra plant in Kentucky recalled Armour brand pork loin products because they contained a milk protein not listed as an ingredient. No amount was specified.
