010458 Schuylkill, PA Beef Plant to Bring 400 Jobs

April 29, 2001

Schuylkill County, PA - celebrated the latest success of the Keystone Opportunity Zone program last week with the announcement that a meat-packing facility will open, creating 400 jobs.

State Rep. Dave Argall (R-Schuylkill) praised the program, which he credited with attracting Excel Beef to the Humboldt West Industrial Park in East Union Township.

The Keystone Opportunity Zone program was launched in 1999 to spur economic revitalization by offering real estate tax exemptions to companies that locate within designated blighted areas for up to 12 years.

Excel Beef is a branch of Excel, a Wichita, KS company that produces prepackaged meats for distribution to supermarkets. Excel is one of the top meat-producing companies in the United States and employs 20,000 people in 11 states. The company plans to build a 229,000-square-foot plant on 40 acres at Route 924 and Green Mountain Road. No slaughtering will take place at the East Union Township site.
