March 31, 2001

Washington - ConAgra Grocery Products Co. is recalling about 55,000 cans of chicken noodle soup because the soup may contain metal fragments, federal food safety officials said.

The Archbold, Ohio-based company became aware of the problem after consumers complained, the Agriculture Department's Food and Safety Inspection Service said Friday. There were no reports of injuries, a company official said.

Company spokeswoman Karen Lynn said ConAgra officials were unsure how the metal got into the soup.

The product being recalled in 18.75-ounce cans of Marie Callender's Hearty Chicken 'N Homestyle Noodles soup. Each can bears the marking “EST. P-91” on the USDA seal of inspection and a date code of “023L3P91.” The product was produced and packaged Feb. 3, 2000, and distributed to retail stores in California, Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, Nevada and Colorado.
