010103 Irradiated Beef Is Selling Briskly

January 4, 2001

Minnesota - Like an E. coli outbreak it is designed to prevent, irradiated ground beef is spreading steadily to more stores since it was first introduced to Twin Cities consumers in May.

First available in 84 stores across the metro area, the specially treated hamburger patties now are being sold in more than 2,000 stores nationwide. Schwan's, the Marshall, Minn.-based company that markets ice cream and assorted food products door-to-door in 48 states, also carries them.

“Generally, we're pleased with how it's been selling since we introduced it in May,” said John Ward, a spokesman for Eden Prairie-based Supervalu, the parent company of Cub Foods.
