001251 Hog Farmers Get Referendum Recount

December 23, 2000

Washington - Another recount is on, this time for votes by hog farmers.

Ballots that were declared invalid in a referendum on a pork promotion program are being reviewed to determine whether they can be counted, the Agriculture Department said Wednesday.

The pork program, best known for the advertising slogan, “The Other White Meat,” is financed through a fee that some hog producers no longer want to pay.

Out of 30,000 ballots cast in the referendum this fall, about 2,000 were invalidated because they lacked such information as the voter's address and the date registration and certification forms were signed. The missing information was for administration needs, the department said.

The department said in a press release that it expects to announce the results of the referendum the first week of January.
