000351 KFC Triple Crunch Zinger “Best of Show”

March 18, 2000

Louisville, KY - The American Tasting Institute's panel of master tasters awarded KFC(r)'s Triple Crunch(r) Zinger(TM) as “2000 Best of Show” during a recent blind taste test of 21 chicken sandwiches at eight national fast food chains, including Wendy's, McDonald's, Burger King, Arby's, Jack in the Box, Carl's Jr, Popeye's and KFC.

The master tasters are professional chefs who conduct blind taste tests and award points based on taste, appearance, freshness and overall impression. The total number of points possible was 10, and the sandwiches receiving an average score of 9 or better were awarded “Best of Show.” This is the first time in the Institute's history a sandwich has been honored.

“Sandwich lovers with an affinity for spicy foods will love KFC's Triple Crunch Zinger sandwich,” said Jesse Sartain, master taster for the American Tasting Institute. “The Zinger is a hearty sandwich with the perfect combination of spices to give it a big, bold flavor.”

The Triple Crunch(r) Zinger(TM) features three freshly prepared, crispy and juicy white meat chicken strips, plus a fiery blend of peppers and spices in a mayonnaise sauce. The sandwich is topped with shredded lettuce and sliced tomato and served on a specially made Pepperidge Farm(r) bun.

March Madness

The Triple Crunch(r) Zinger(TM) is available for $1.99 at KFC restaurants nationwide through April 2nd. The limited time offer is supported with a 30- second basketball-themed commercial that introduces the biggest, boldest player in the Colonel's sandwich lineup -- the Triple Crunch(r) Zinger(TM). The spot, created and produced by Young & Rubicam/New York with animation by Wild Brain/San Francisco, will air during top college basketball games. KFC is an Official NCAA Corporate Partner.

Founded in 1993, San Francisco-based American Tasting Institute conducts a regular judging of consumer and food service products to honor “America's Best” food, beverage, equipment and tabletop products. Master tasters who are professional chefs judge the products, and some taste tests include the Institute's national board comprised of 50 chefs in 15 cities across the country. The Institute's awards program includes the American Taste Award (food and beverage), the American Culinary Award (housewares and tabletop) and the American Quality Award (E-commerce, and business-to-business sectors).
