000233 US May Shift Away From Sanctions In Beef Dispute

Washington - The European Union said the United States may seek compensation rather than impose sanctions against Europe in a dispute over hormone-treated beef, a spokesman for EU Trade Commissioner Pascal Lamy said on Thursday.

“The U.S. can either receive compensation or apply sanctions until we comply with the WTO panel, and obviously we prefer compensation to sanctions,” spokesman Anthony Gooch told reporters before a meeting between Lamy and U.S. Trade Representative Charlene Barshefsky.
