980555 Sanova Food Quality System Approved For Continuous On-Line Processing Trials

May 29, 1998

Redmond, WA - Alcide Corporation and Novus International, Inc. announced that the Sanova Food Quality System, the microbial control solution from Novus International approved earlier this year by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for use in poultry processing, received further USDA approval this month for multiple plant “continuous on-line processing” trials. Sanova is a completely automated system utilizing the most powerful and effective bactericide currently available for use in food to kill E. coli, Salmonella, Listeria, Campylobacter and other bacteria.

“We are very excited about moving forward with these trials,” said Robert Powell, Director, Sanova Systems. “We have already seen the unbeatable results that Sanova delivers for processors in terms of microbial control and systems management in bringing higher quality, safer products to consumers; now we have the opportunity to demonstrate additional benefits which will greatly impact a user's bottom line.”

Alcide President and Chief Executive Officer, Joseph A. Sasenick, added that, “We are encouraged by the industry interest Novus has generated for Sanova during the past four months. The USDA approval for continuous on-line processing trials has already attracted additional poultry processor commitments to the Sanova System.”

Current protocol requires that carcasses with visible fecal matter be removed from the processing line and “reprocessed” manually, which is both time consuming and costly. Under the agreement, USDA inspection officials will allow trial participants to process carcasses, normally subject to off-line reprocessing, on-line using the Sanova System.

The Sanova System is a turn-key solution for controlling bacterial contamination to help poultry producers provide the highest quality products in accordance with USDA's recently implemented HACCP “Mega Regs.” The Sanova bactericide, the most powerful and effective product on the market today, was developed by Alcide Corporation. The solution is applied via a Novus engineered, easy-to-use application system between the final bird wash and the chiller.

In contrast to other systems, the Sanova System applies only fresh, unused solution to birds. Other systems currently in use recycle antimicrobial solutions, a practice which can contaminate untreated birds with minute particles of fecal matter from carcasses which have preceded them.

Sanova is safe for workers and the environment. It contains no phosphates and can be discarded directly into the normal waste stream.

The Sanova System also incorporates Novus' cutting edge management solutions including Provus Process Control Technology and AIMS Automated Inventory Management System. Provus helps with quality control by monitoring and reporting the performance of key control points in the operation, tracking historical data and instantly alerting users to potential problems. AIMS ensures that users never run out of base or activator solutions, automatically ordering and delivering the amount and type of product needed.

Alcide Corporation is dedicated to the research, development, and commercialization of antimicrobial products for animal health, human health, and industrial applications. The company holds substantial worldwide rights to its discoveries and technologies through various patents, patent applications, trademarks and know-how. Alcide disinfectant systems are unique in the marketplace. The company's patented chemical compounds produce strong biocidal activity, a broad spectrum of kill, and sustained activity against a wide range of disease causing microorganisms.

Novus International, Inc. is a privately held corporation headquartered in St. Louis, MO. A global leader in the animal agriculture industry, Novus has sales of over $400 million, operating through direct sales to integrated poultry producers in more than 60 countries. Novus manufactures and markets Alimet feed supplement, the world's leading source of supplemental methionine and is the exclusive marketer of Santoquin feed preservative. Novus' wholly owned subsidiary, Omnus, Inc., develops and markets specialized software for animal agriculture and environmental control systems for the layer and broiler industries.
