980357 USDA to Hold Country-Of-Origin Meat Label Meeting

March 24, 1998

Washington - The U.S. Agriculture Department will hold a meeting in the next 30 days to discuss country-of-origin labeling for meat with several farm-state senators, USDA officials.

U.S. Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman announced the upcoming meeting after he met with senators in the Capitol to discuss declining U.S. meat prices.

Some lawmakers have proposed that the United States require food products to carry a label with the country in which the product was produced. Backers of the proposal claim the labels will give U.S. consumers more information when shopping for groceries.

However, at a House subcommittee hearing last week, Glickman and Peter Scher, the U.S. special ambassador for agricultural trade, said that although country-of-origin labeling may boost sales of U.S. farm products at home, it could also prompt a backlash from consumers abroad.
