971125 USDA lifts restrictions on sliced pork imports

November 13, 1997

Washington - U.S. Agriculture Department said t would allow imports of sliced and prepackaged pork products into the United States.

Beginning Dec 15, the U.S. will allow imports of prepackaged and presliced pork products that come from whole, dry-cured hams, pork shoulders and pork loins that meet the requirements of USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.

The slicing and packaging must be done at an APHIS-approved plant in the same area as where the pork was dry-cured, USDA said.

The conditions allow APHIS officials to verify the meat's origin and how it was processed, and to make sure that the meat is free of disease agents.
