971050 Maple Leaf Processed Meats Plant Ratifies New Collective Agreement

BURLINGTON, Ont - Maple Leaf Meats announced that it has reached a new collective agreement with its Weston, Ontario processed meats plant.

The plant has approximately 255 employees, members of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union Locals 175 and 633. The new agreement will be in place from January 15, 1997 through to January 14, 1999. Details of the agreement have not been disclosed.

"We are pleased we were able to reach an agreement at the Weston plant," said Patrick F. Jones, Executive Vice President, Maple Leaf Meats. "This is an excellent plant that supports most of the Maple Leaf retail product line. The settlement allows us to focus our attention and the efforts of employees at the plant on growing the business for the future."

"Maple Leaf is committed to building a North American competitive pork processing industry in Canada," added Jones. "To do this we need the support of our employees and their unions. We need to work together if we are to successfully compete against our American competitors."

The plant in Weston, Ontario produces processed meats such as bologna, sliced meats and pepperoni.
