MANILA - Manila has approved the import of 25,306 tonnes of beef and 1,640 tonnes of frozen pork between October and December this year, the Agriculture Department said in a statement on Tuesday.

It also said it would ask importers to submit their applications under a "first-come, first-served basis" between October 9 and November 30 for the import of an additional 3,829 tonnes of beef and 2,676.8 tonnes of frozen pork.

Thirty-seven meat processors were allowed to import beef at a minimum tariff of 30 percent.

Seven meat processors and a trading firm were allowed to import the frozen pork at a tariff of 30 percent.

Agriculture Department officials said the beef imports were on top of licences given for the import of 57,064 tonnes earlier this year.

Philippines firms had so far imported 48,380.79 tonnes of beef, mostly from Australia.

Early this year, the government allowed imports of 36,135 tonnes of frozen pork at a reduced tariff.

As of October, local firms had so far imported 5,502.467 tonnes, mostly from Canada.
