MINNEAPOLIS, Oct 1 - Cargill Inc said that its meatpacking subsidiary Excel Corp, will permanently close its beef processing plant in Sterling, Colo., on November 29, due to poor financial results.
The 31-year old plant employs 335 people and normally handles 700 to 900 cattle a day.
"The plant wasn't meeting financial performance expectations," Cargill said in a statement.
Cargill said 275 workers at the plant would be put on a list for preferential hiring at other Excel plants including one nearby in Ft. Morgan, Colo.
Excel acquired the Sterling and Ft. Morgan plants from Sterling Beef Co in 1987. The Sterling plant opened in 1966.
