080106 Smithfield: No Plans for Cloned Meat

January 16, 2007

Smithfield, VA - Pork processor Smithfield Foods Inc. said it has no plans to produce meat products from cloned animals, although the Food and Drug Administration is expected to rule the animals are safe for human consumption.

"We are committed to maintaining our focus on the development and improvement of our meat products through careful selective breeding and genetic research," the company said in a statement.

The FDA is expected to give final approval for the sale of meat and milk from cloned animals after indicating last year that the products had no differences compared with meat from naturally bred animals.
