071253 Poultry Slaughter Activity DeclinesDecember 31, 2007Washington - Poultry certified wholesome during November 2007 (ready-to-cook weight) totalled 3.57 billion pounds, up 3% from the quantity certified in November 2006, shows this USDA statistics. The October 2007 revised certified total at 4.00 billion pounds, was up 6% from October 2006. The October revision represented an gain of 7.96 million pounds from last month's preliminary pounds certified. The preliminary total live weight of poultry inspected during November 2007 was 4.81 billion pounds, up 3% from 4.67 billion pounds a year ago. Young chickens inspected totalled 4.07 billion pounds, up 3% from November 2006. Mature chickens, at 64.7 million pounds, were up slightly from a year ago. Turkey inspections totalled 660 million pounds, up 3% from a year ago. Ducks totalled 15.7 million pounds, down 1% from a year ago. Young chickens slaughtered during November 2007 averaged 5.63 pounds per bird, up 2% from November 2006. The average live weight of mature chickens was 6.03 pounds per bird, down 5% from a year ago. Turkeys slaughtered during November 2007 averaged 27.7 pounds per bird, up 2% from November 2006. Ante-mortem condemnations during November 2007 totalled 14.3 million pounds. Condemnations were 0.30% of the live weight inspected, as compared to 0.33% a year earlier. Post-mortem condemnations, at 41.6 million pounds, were 1.15% of quantities inspected, as compared with 1.24% a year earlier.
