051119 Meat Packer Recalls Suspect Ground Beef

November 5, 2005

American Fresh Foods Inc. has recalled 6,000 pounds of its 73 percent lean ground beef, about 1,000 pounds of which was shipped to Kash n' Karry Food Stores and Sweetbay Supermarket.

The Tampa-based grocery chains, which are operated by Delhaize Group, destroyed all the suspect meat in its stores and warehouse. But the company is encouraging customers who bought the ground beef product with a sell-by date between Nov. 2 and Nov. 5 to return it for a full refund.

The Thomasville, Ga., meat packer issued the voluntary recall, saying it may be contaminated with E. coli 0157:H7. Routine samples tested at Sweetbay and Kash n' Karry turned out negative.
