050819 Brooklyn Firm Recalls Meat and Poultry products

August 2, 2005

A Brooklyn, NY manufacturing company is recalling 93,200 pounds of numerous meat and poultry products because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes , a species of bacteria that can potentially cause illness, Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin announced today.

Illyssa Manufacturing Corporation of Brooklyn, New York, issued the nationwide recall. Each package of the recalled products bears the establishment number "P-19629" inside the USDA seal of inspection.

The products were produced on various dates from July 1 to July 29.

Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, an uncommon but potentially serious disease. The most common manifestation of listeriosis is meningitis, which has symptoms of high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea.

Listeriosis can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths, as well as serious and sometimes fatal infections to infants, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems such as persons with chronic disease, AIDS or HIV infection or taking chemotherapy for cancer.
