050626 Mad Cow Night Fuel Organic Beef Demand

June 30, 2005

Vermillion, SD - A company that raises organic beef in South Dakota said another case of mad cow disease in the United States will likely increase demand for its product.

Dakota Beef of Howard, SD touts itself as being free of mad cow disease because the cattle only eat plants.

Seldon Moreland, the company's spokesman, said the animals don't eat animal byproducts. They live on pastures free of pesticides and herbicides and are never given growth hormones or antibiotics, he said.

Moreland said the cattle are also traced from birth to slaughter to be certified.

Despite the second positive test for mad cow, the U.S. Agriculture Department said consumers should not worry about the safety of the country's beef supply.
