050414 Cargill Looks To Enter Brazil Beef Business

April 14, 2005

Sao Paulo - U.S. agribusiness company Cargill may enter the Brazilian beef industry following its purchase of major chicken firm Seara Alimentos last year, a Seara official said Monday, according to local business daily Valor Economico.

Recently Cargill entered in a joint venture to produce beef in Argentina with Finex Cor.

"Brazil is the largest animal protein market in the world," said Serio Rial, Seara's new president-director.

Brazil was the world's largest exporter of beef in 2004 and the largest chicken exporter.

Cargill bought Seara Alimentos for $130 million last year, signaling the company`s entry into the Brazilian meat industry. According to Rial, Brazil will become the company's principal platform for chicken exports.
