041219 Merrill Karlen Jr. Appointed to National Beef Board

Washington, DC - Merrill Karlen Jr. of Reliance has been appointed by U.S. Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman to the Cattlemen's Beef Promotion and Research Board.

Karlen and the other 38 members appointed last week will serve three-year terms beginning Feb. 6.

A cow-calf producer and feeder, Karlen is past president of the South Dakota Cattlemen's Association.

The beef board is composed of 108 members representing 35 states, regional units and importers. USDA selects appointees from cattle producers and importers nominated by organizations representing beef, dairy, veal and importer interests.

Other appointees from this region include Carol Mosher, Montana; Ross Garwood and Doris Rush, Nebraska; and Jeff Dahl, North Dakota.

The board is authorized by the Beef Promotion and Research Act of 1985. USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service monitors operation of the board.
