041218 South Dakota Red Meat Production Up

Sioux Falls, SD - Commercial red meat production for South Dakota totaled 94.2 million pounds during October, up 6% from one year ago and up 9% from September, according to the South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service, a branch of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

October pork production and sheep and lamb production were up from one year ago, the service said in a news release.

Commercial hog slaughter for South Dakota totaled 456,000 head during October compared with 418,700 head last year.

Commercial sheep and lamb slaughter for South Dakota totaled 1,200 head during October compared with 1,000 head last year. Average live weight was 119 pounds, which was down 11 pounds from October 2003. Federally inspected slaughter totaled 1,000 head of lambs and yearlings.
