041036 Safeway Recalls Ground Beef

October 31, 2004

Sacramento - CA - Safeway supermarkets is recalling ground beef sold at an Elk Grove store because it may contain pieces of metal and plastic.

The state Health Department says the grocery store chain is investigating how the meat may have become contaminated.

The 671 pounds of fresh ground beef was sold at a store at Elk Grove and Florin Roads yesterday and today. The company says the recalled meat includes all types and weights of ground beef and would have sell-by dates marked today and tomorrow.

The company says the problem was discovered when meat processing equipment was cleaned. Safeway says it is offering replacements or refunds.
