041027 Nebraska Red Meat Production Down

Omaha, NB - Commercial red meat production in Nebraska during September was down 7% from the previous year, according to a report released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

According to the report, commercial red meat production was 642.2 million pounds in September of 2003 compared to 597.6 million pounds this year. September's numbers were a slight increase for red meat production during August, which was 592.3 million pounds.

Nationwide, commercial red meat production totaled 3.91 billion pounds in September, down 3% from the 4.01 billion pounds produced in September 2003.

In Nebraska, beef slaughter during September was 587,800 head compared to 688,900 head in September 2003. That represents a 14% decline. The average liveweight was 1,307 pounds compared to September 2003 at 1,249.

Nationwide, beef production, at 2.10 billion pounds, was 9% below the previous year. Cattle slaughter totaled 2.74 million head, down 13% from September 2003. The average live weight was up 38 pounds from the previous year, at 1,266 pounds.

Hog slaughter in Nebraska during September was 617,000 head compared to 590,600 head a year ago. The average liveweight was 264 pounds compared to a year ago at 261 pounds.

Pork production totaled 1.77 billion pounds, up 6% from the previous year. Hog kill totaled 9.00 million head, 5% above September 2003. The average live weight was 2 pounds above the previous year, at 265 pounds.

Nationwide, January to September 2004 commercial red meat production was 33.8 billion pounds, down 3% from 2003. Accumulated beef production was down 9% from last year, veal was down 11%, pork was up 4% from last year, and lamb and mutton production was down 2%.
