041007 Iowa Supreme Court Expected to Rule on Livestock

October 9, 2004

Des Moines, IO - The Iowa Supreme Court is expected to issue rulings on a Worth County ordinance that sets new restrictions on hog operations. Supervisors approved the ordinance in 2001. It restricts emissions coming from hog lots.

The ordinance was successfully challenged by farm groups that claim state law governs livestock operations and that counties can't intervene.

The Sierra Club, Iowa Farmers Union and a Worth County citizens' group filed a brief in support of the ordinance. The groups have scheduled a Statehouse news conference in Des Moines today to talk about the Supreme Court's ruling.
