040419 Tyson Cuts Beef Production

April 10, 2004

Tyson Foods reduced beef production at some of its U.S. plants this week in reaction to tight supplies of market-ready cattle, slow beef sales and reduced beef exports, according to the company.

Tyson closed five beef plants on Monday and one on Tuesday, and reduced operating levels at other plants. The company did not identify the affected plants.

In the Memphis region Tyson employs about 4,000 people at its plants in Union City, Tenn., Pine Bluff, Ark., and Cleveland, Miss. None of these are beef plants, however.

Tyson has 10 U.S. beef plants, with one each in Iowa, Illinois, Idaho, Texas and Washington, two in Kansas and three in Nebraska. The company is the nation's largest beef producer.

Springdale, Ark.-based Tyson Foods is the world's largest processor and marketer of chicken, beef and pork, and the second largest food company in the Fortune 500. The company employs about 120,000 workers in 300 facilities and offices in 29 states and 22 countries.
