031206 Illinois Pork Plant Delays Production

December 4, 2003

Des Moines, IA - USDA has orderd a Cargill pork production plant to delay its operation Wednesday and Thursday, due to an "issue" in its livestock area. DTN asked Cargill to define the issue, but their spokesman would not elaborate.

The pork plant facility located in Beardstown, Ill., has a daily kill capacity of 16,000-17,000 head.

Cargill spokesman Mark Klein said the second production shift was halted on Wednesday along with Thursday's first shift.

"We've provided a letter of proposed action to the USDA," said Klein. "We've received no word back yet."
