031130 Nova Scotia Cattle Farmers Get BSE Relief Fund

November 13, 2003

Halifax -- Nova Scotia cattle farmers will receive financial help from the provincial government.

Agriculture Minister Chris d'Entremont announced the government's $3.5 million commitment on Thursday.

D'Entremont says fears over mad cow disease have hit the industry hard and that government has listened to cattle producers' calls for a swift response.

Two weeks ago a government task force recommended spending $11 million to compensate for suffering after the BSE scare.

Cattle farmers will get immediate help at a rate of $100 per breeding cow after they register for the program.

The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries will also initiate a BSE recovery program retroactive to Sept. 1 of this year.

Details of that plan will be released later this week.
