031117 Wisconsin Firm Recalls Possibly Tainted Beef

November 8, 2003

Washington - The Abbyland Beef Co. announced the voluntary recall of 11,800 pounds of beef that might be contaminated with E. coli bacteria.

The Department of Agriculture said the boneless beef was produced Oct. 21 and distributed to Delaware, Illinois and Wisconsin wholesalers.

On Oct. 31, Abbyland Beef initially recalled approximately 78,600 pounds of boneless beef that had been distributed to wholesale establishments in Illinois, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

The recall was expanded Thursday because of the possibility additional product from Oct. 21 may have been contaminated.

The products being recalled are various cuts of boneless beef shipped in containers bearing the words "BONELESS BEEF" and USDA establishment No. "EST. 1633" inside the USDA mark of inspection.

E. coli is a potentially deadly bacteria, but federal officials said no illnesses associated with the beef have been reported.

Consumers with questions may contact Tiffiny Pierce, an Abbyland microbiologist, at 715-223-6386, ext. 7228.
