031109 Canadian Mad Cow Aid In Trouble

November 8, 2003

Calgary - A deal to compensate beef producers for older cattle is running into trouble, with disagreement over how the plan should be administered, federal Agriculture Minister Lyle Vanclief says.

Last week Vanclief announced that a deal on financial aid, worth about $200 million, was close to being finalized.

The money would be used to help farmers feed cattle they can't sell because of the on-going mad cow crisis, and encourage the slaughter of animals older than 30 months.

"We have a situation in Canada that there is not a large demand for, and an ability right now to use the meat from, the older animals and to have the killing capacity for the older animals," Vanclief said.

The United States has started the process of allowing live cattle across the border, but no actual movement will happen for more than two months. As well, it will only affect cattle younger than 30 months.
