031045 September Meat Production Record

Washington - Commercial red meat production for the US totaled 4.01 billion pounds in September, a monthly record high, USDA reported this morning. That total was up 3% from a year ago.

Beef production was a monthly record high 2.31 billion pounds, 5% above the previous year. Cattle slaughter was up 9% over a year ago, while the average live weight was down 36 pounds from the previous year.

Pork production was also a monthly record high, at 1.66 billion pounds, up 2% from the previous year. Hog kill totaled 8.55 million head, up 1% from September, 2002, while the average live weight was up 3 pounds from the previous year.
