030910 Tyson Foods to Cut 400 Jobs in Hope, Ark.

September 24, 2003

Hope, AR - Tyson Foods Inc., the world's largest meat company, will cut up to 600 jobs, or about one- third of the work force, at its chicken processing plant here, a company spokesman said Wednesday.

Between 500 and 600 employees will lose their jobs, beginning Oct. 4, company spokesman Ed Nicholson said.

Tyson Foods will have other companies in Arkadelphia and Dardanelle do some of the labor-intensive operations that are now performed by workers at the Hope plant, Nicholson said.

"It's just more economically viable," he said.

Besides processing chicken, the plant at Hope, which currently has about 1,650 employees, handles breading, battering and cooking chicken.

The company and state will help affected employees find other jobs, Nicholson said. Positions might be available at Tyson Foods operations in nearby Grannis, Nashville and Texarkana.

More than 120,000 people work for Tyson Foods in the United States and Mexico.
