030607 OSHA Looks Into Meat Processing Death

June 15, 2003

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the death of a food plant worker caught in a meat-processing machine. Thirty-four-year Daniel Cruz Romero died Friday. He was killed after being caught in a meat-processing machine at Michael Angelo's Gourmet Foods in Round Rock. Romero had complained to a former co-worker he was having trouble with the machine. Police said his entire body went through the machine. The machine is not a meat grinder but it moves meat downward to be processed further. The large, bowl-shaped machine contains paddle-like arms that move in a circular motion. Round Rock police Sergeant Robert Horton described the scene as "gruesome." Two years ago, the federal agency now investigating cited the same manufacturer for more than 50 federal health and safety violations.
