030103 NY Company Recalls Chicken Hot Dogs

January 4, 2003

Washington - A New York-based company is recalling 26,400 pounds of chicken frankfurters because they may be contaminated with harmful bacteria, the Department of Agriculture said.

The frankfurters made by PRG Packing Corp. may be contaminated with listeria, which can cause food poisoning. The meat was produced on Nov. 27 and distributed to stores and wholesalers in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York. So far, no illnesses have been reported, the Agriculture Department said.

Consumers who find they have the recalled meat should return it to the stores where they bought it, said Garry L. McKee, administrator of USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service.

The products under recall are 16-ounce packages of "Sweet Meadow Farms Brand, Chicken Frankfurters." Each one is labeled with the establishment code P-5281 inside the USDA seal of inspection. They also are marked with a sell-by date of Jan. 29.

Listeria can cause a severe, flu-like illness and, in some cases, death. People who are prone to infection include those with weak immune systems, the elderly, children and pregnant women.
