020924 Stop & Shop Recalls Ground Beef

September 17, 2002

Quincy, MA - The Stop & Shop Supermarket Company is voluntarily recalling all ground beef and store made ground beef patties sold to customers between September 5, 2002 and September 14, 2002, from stores in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York and New Jersey after learning that the product may be contaminated with E. coli 0157:H7. The recall is part of a larger scale announcement made by the Moyer Packing Company on September 14, 2002, which involves several retailers. Laboratory tests by the United States Department of Agriculture confirmed the presence of the bacteria during random sampling of beef from a processor that was supplied product from Moyer Packing Company. No regulatory agency has confirmed the presence of E coli 0157:H7 in any product sold at Stop & Shop

As a precautionary measure, Stop & Shop immediately removed the product from its shelves on September 14, 2002 after notification from its supplier about the ground beef recall.

Because of the potential hazard of foodborne illness, any customer who purchased the product between September 5, 2002 and September 14, 2002, and has a portion of it remaining, should remove it from the refrigerator or freezer and return it to the store for a full refund.
