020747 Recall May Affect Some Wal-Mart Stores

July 20, 2002

Bentonville, AR - Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said some of its discount stores and Sam's Club wholesale stores may be affected by a massive recall of ConAgra Foods Inc. meat.

Bentonville, Arkansas-based Wal-Mart, the world's largest retailer, said it has removed all recalled three-pound bags of Great Value frozen beef patties from its shelves. It said specific fresh ground beef in five-pound rolls, bulk and patties that customers have purchased may also be affected.

It said its Sam's Club stores also voluntarily removed 90-percent fresh ground beef and 90-percent fresh ground beef patties with sell-by dates of May 17 and July 19. It said members who bought these products should return them to Sam's Club for a refund or replacement.

Wal-Mart said there have been no reported illnesses associated with these products.

On Friday, ConAgra launched the nation's second-largest recall of ground beef after the U.S. Agriculture Department said the meat may be contaminated with a deadly bacteria that sickened at least 16 people.
