020223 World Pork Expo Returning to Des Moines

February 9, 2002

Des Moines, IA - World Pork Expo will mark a triumphant return to Des Moines June 6, 7 and 8, 2002, at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. This three-day event will host some 50,000 visitors from across the country and around the globe.

Theme of the 2002 World Pork Expo, “Hooray for the Red, White and Blue,” hits home with producers of pork, “the other white meat,” and with anyone who wants to show up in their blue jeans to enjoy barbecue from the famous Big Grill.

The three-day event will feature more fun and entertainment than ever -- the famous Big Grill, entertainment, the ever-popular pig races, the pork product showcase, breed show and sales, seminars, Pork Industry “Business District” and more.

Barb Determan, a pork producer from Early, Iowa, who serves as National Pork Producers Council president, says this 14th annual event will be the biggest yet.

“We are thrilled to be hosting the World Pork Expo again,” Determan says. “This event adds tremendous value to the pork industry, to the producers who grow pork and to the people who buy and serve pork products in their homes.”

Iowa's Secretary of Agriculture, Patty Judge, agrees. “Iowa is number one in the nation in pork production,” Judge says. “The contribution of the pork industry to Iowa is vital to a healthy state economy.”

World Pork Expo is the world's premier pork industry event, also hosting some 3,000 international visitors and showcasing the companies of nearly 600 exhibitors. More than 100 media representatives are expected from national and international news agencies.
