010808 Supermarket Recalls Beef in Rhode Island

August 2, 2001

Quincy, MA - The Stop & Shop Supermarket Company is voluntarily recalling Stop & Shop Ground Beef sold to customers between July 26, 2001 and July 27, 2001, with a sell-by date of 7/27, at its 333 West River Street/Branch Avenue store in Providence, Rhode Island. The recall was issued after learning that a sample of product was contaminated with E. coli 0157:H7, as confirmed by laboratory tests conducted by the United States Department of Agriculture during random sampling of beef at store level.

Because of the potential hazard of food-borne disease, any customer who purchased the product between July 26, 2001 and July 27, 2001, and has a portion of it remaining, should remove it from the freezer and return it to the store for a full refund. Customers with questions may call Stop & Shop's Consumer Relations Department at 1-800-767-7772.
