010658 Burger King to Meet With USDA Inspection Unit

June 29, 2001

Miami, FL - Burger King Corporation (BKC) announced that, following a call from senior officials of the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) to the company, a meeting has been set for July 10th between its top executives and top FSIS officials to discuss among other topics the petition that BKC filed. The FSIS is the agency entrusted with enforcing the federal Humane Slaughter Act, which the company stated in its petition is inadequately enforced.

“We are extremely pleased with the quick response from the FSIS regarding the issues raised in our petition,” said John Dasburg, chairman, chief executive officer and president, Burger King Corporation. “Their willingness to engage in dialogue regarding the enforcement of the Act is a very positive beginning. We look forward to an open and frank discussion with FSIS officials.”

The company also announced the adoption of industry-leading food animal handling guidelines and audits that will require its suppliers to adhere to the strictest standards in the industry. These guidelines will be enforced through a series of announced and unannounced audits. Suppliers who do not meet Burger King Corporation's animal handling standards will face disciplinary action.
