010619 Huisken Launches Line of Irradiated Ground Beef

June 11, 2001

San Diego, CA - The SureBeam Corporation -- innovator of the nation's first electronic pasteurization system -- announced that Huisken Meats is introducing a new product line of SureBeam electronically pasteurized ground beef products in 22 states.

Last year, SureBeam and the Minnesota-based Huisken Meats launched the nation's first supermarket hamburger product to be electronically pasteurized with SureBeam's technology. Since that introduction, the availability of SureBeam pasteurized ground beef products has expanded rapidly, reflecting growing consumer demand and Huisken's desire to increase the number of products it offers.

Huisken Meats' new rollout includes five ground beef products: Four frozen beef patty packages having 75% and 90% leanness which are available in two- and four-pound sizes, as well as a two-pound ground beef package in 90% leanness. Each ground beef package offers convenient, half-pound portions for ease of preparation.

“Let's not forget what's at stake here,” said Minnesota Health Commissioner Jan Malcolm. “Foodborne illness can be very serious. In some circumstances, it can be life-threatening -- especially for young children. These products can drastically reduce the risk of getting a food-related disease. They represent the most important advance in food safety since the introduction of pasteurized milk in an earlier era.”

Similar to a microwave oven, the SureBeam electronic pasteurization system uses ordinary electricity as its energy source to pasteurize food after it has been processed and packaged. SureBeam's patented system instantly eliminates the threat of harmful food-borne bacteria such as E. coli O157:H7, Listeria, Campylobacter and Salmonella without compromising quality.

SureBeam electronically pasteurized products are sold across the nation in thousands of supermarkets, as well as by home delivery, direct mail, and through food service.

Currently, the FDA and USDA have approved SureBeam technology for use on all raw meats, fruits and vegetables. In addition to these raw products, SureBeam has expanded its agreements with many of the nation's major ready-to-eat food companies in anticipation of the FDA and USDA's approval of the use of SureBeam technology on precooked, ready-to-eat foods. According to the CDC, every year 76 million Americans get sick and over 5,000 people -- usually children and the elderly -- die from food-borne diseases. E. coli and salmonella, for example, are found in raw foods, such as hamburger, while listeria is found in precooked, ready-to-eat foods, such as hot dogs, deli meats, and soft cheese. SureBeam technology is specifically designed to eliminate harmful bacteria in these foods.

Most of the nation's most prominent health and medical organizations support or endorse the use of electronic pasteurization technology, including the American Medical Association, the American Dietetic Association, The World Health Organization, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

SureBeam Corporation was created, built, and launched by The Titan Corporation in an initial public offering on March 16.

Headquartered in San Diego, California, SureBeam is a leading provider of electronic pasteurization systems and services for the food industry. SureBeam's technology significantly improves food safety, prolongs shelf life, and provides disinfestation that helps to protect the environment. The SureBeam patented electronic pasteurization system is based on proven electron beam and x-ray technology that instantly destroys harmful food-borne bacteria. This technology can also eliminate the need for toxic chemical fumigants used in pest control that may be harmful to the earth's ozone layer.
