010508 White Castle Celebrates National Hamburger Month

May 6, 2001

Columbus, OH - White Castle is proud to sponsor National Hamburger Month. What better way to celebrate the nation's favorite food, than with its own month? And who better to sponsor it than White Castle, the company that introduced America to its defining culinary experience -- the fast food hamburger?

National Hamburger Month is even more special this year as White Castle commemorates its 80th year of supplying Americans with hamburgers. In order to celebrate with their fans, White Castle is holding its annual recipe contest, the “Crave Time Cook-Off.” The contest, now in its 10th year, allows White Castle enthusiasts to come up with their own creations using 10 of the little square hamburgers. Culinary-inclined cravers have until July 1 to turn in their recipes for this contest. The winner of the Crave Time Cook-Off will be determined on August 22 by a panel of judges.

Recipes should be sent with name, address and phone number to: White Castle Management Company, c/o Recipe Contest, 555 West Goodale St., Columbus, OH 43215. Recipes can also be entered on the Web site: www.whatyoucrave.com. Winners will receive 52 sacks of 10 White Castle hamburgers, one per week, for a year.

White Castle will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the contest with a unique, commemorative cookbook incorporating many recipes submitted over the past several years. This recipe book, which will be available in time for Thanksgiving, will be sold for $1.99 and all proceeds will be donated to food charities.

Also as part of the National Hamburger Month celebration, White Castle will induct 10 of their biggest fans in the first Cravers Hall of Fame induction ceremony on May 17 in Columbus. More then 1100 cravers submitted their stories of the extremes they go to for White Castle, so the 10 inductees represent the truest of the true cravers. The company intends to add more cravers to the hall of fame every National Hamburger Month.

White Castle also observes National Hamburger Month by having employees from the Home Office go to various locations and work a shift in a restaurant. This allows them to know what it is like to work on the “front lines” directly with the customers, and it gives them an opportunity to see all the hard work the “hamburger heroes” do at the restaurants every day.

Celebrations of National Hamburger Month will continue throughout the month of May at White Castle including special deals at certain locations that also commemorate the 80th anniversary of the company.
