001130 Tyson Food Donations Reach Million Pound Milestone

November 18, 2000

Springdale, AR - Tyson Foods, Inc. has reached its one million pound donation milestone. Since announcing their partnership with Share Our Strength in May, the company has donated more than one million pounds of chicken to food banks across the country and provided more than 5 million meals to hungry Americans. These product donations are part of the total 6.5 million pounds that Tyson will distribute over the next three years to help those at risk of hunger or malnutrition.

Even though our country continues to enjoy high economic prosperity, there are still 31 million Americans who are at risk of hunger or malnutrition. Of those 31 million, nearly 15 million are children. Utilizing Share Our Strength's network of food relief agencies, Tyson and Share Our Strength are working together to identify the areas most in need of food donations. Tyson expects to donate nearly one million meals each month for the next three years to communities across America.

“Donating our first million pounds is only the beginning of our commitment to helping Share Our Strength fight hunger in America,” said John Tyson, chairman, president and CEO of Tyson Foods. “We are proud of all of our team members who are dedicating their time and efforts to help support this cause and our partnership.”

This donation helped to provide meals to those at risk of hunger in more than 20 cities throughout the country, including Atlanta; Boston; Charlotte, N.C.; Chicago; Cincinnati; Cleveland; Dallas; Denver; Detroit; Fort Smith, Ark.; Houston; Indianapolis; Little Rock, Ark.; Los Angeles; Louisville, Ky.; Miami; New York; Northwest Arkansas; Pittsburgh; Russellville, Ark.; and Wilkesboro, N.C.

Tyson launched their $10 million partnership with Share Our Strength, a leading anti-hunger organization, in May. In addition to the product donations, the partnership includes; Tyson team member volunteer programs; advertising and marketing support; and national sponsorship of Operation Frontline, Share Our Strength's nutrition education program.

Operation Frontline is Share Our Strength's education initiative that coordinates and trains volunteer chefs and nutritionists to teach classes on nutrition, healthy cooking, food safety and food budgeting to individuals at risk of hunger and malnutrition. As part of its national sponsorship, Tyson team members will volunteer at Operation Frontline classes across the country.

“We are thrilled to be working with Tyson,” said Bill Shore, founder and executive director of Share Our Strength. “Because of their support through product donations and Operation Frontline sponsorship, we are able to help many hungry Americans and look forward to expanding our resources to assist even more in the future.”

Share Our Strength, one of the nation's leading anti-hunger, anti-poverty organizations, meets immediate demands for food while investing in long-term solutions to end hunger and poverty. Share Our Strength meets its goals by mobilizing individuals and industries to contribute their talents to the fight against hunger and creates community wealth to promote lasting change.
