000760 British Frozen Beefburgers Fatty and Over Salted

July 24, 2000

London - Frozen burgers are full of fat and salt, a British survey showed.

Even after cooking, some are 50% pure fat, the equivalent of six teaspoons, the Food Commission said. Its study of 40 popular beefburgers and grillsteaks found that two thirds contained less than 90% pure meat.

“Compared with regular minced beef at 16% fat, we found some frozen burgers were using meat that was 50% pure fat,” said Food Commission co-director Sue Dibb. “Even after grilling, some products were providing six teaspoons of fat in a single portion, including high levels of artery-clogging saturated fat.”

The Commission, calling for improved food labelling, said it was particularly concerned as British teenagers eat between three and four burgers a week.
