000736 Chicken Salad Recalled for Unlabeled Ingredient

July 10, 2000

Atlanta. GA - Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin announced that a brand of chicken salad is being voluntarily recalled by the manufacturer because it contains a food dye not listed on the label.

Mrs. Stratton's Chicken Salad in seven, 12, and 24-ounce and five-pound clear plastic cup packages are being recalled because the product contains F.D.&C. Yellow #5 dye not listed on the label. Mrs. Stratton's Salads of Birmingham, Alabama, issued the recall. The product was distributed in Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Mississippi and Tennessee. The packages bear the code “Sell by August 6,” “Sell by Aug 11,” or “Sell by Aug 12” on the container bottoms and “P-395” appears in the USDA inspection legend on the labels.

“Our food safety inspectors will be checking to make sure these products are removed from grocery store shelves during their routine inspections,” said Commissioner Irvin. “Law requires that all ingredients be listed on the product label. This lets the public know exactly what they are eating and protects individuals who may have allergic reactions or have other health concerns relating to a particular ingredient,” said Irvin.
