000726 McDonald's Says U.S. Sales Rebounded In June

July 10, 2000

Denver, CO - McDonald's Corp. said its U.S. store sales have bounced back in June after a delayed Teenie Beanie Babies promotion hurt sales in May.

Oak Brook, Ill.-based McDonald's does not report same-store sales, but earlier this month the company said sales at all of its restaurants rose 5% in the period from January to May, which indicated a slowdown in the pace of sales in May.

Restaurant industry analysts estimated that U.S. same-store sales declined about 5-6% in May. The stock fell 8% after the January-May figures were reported.

“June certainly has rebounded. We were up against some very distorted numbers,” Alan Feldman, president of McDonald's USA, told Reuters during a tour of company restaurants in the U.S. West.

Teenie Beanie Babies are small plush animals that are given away with Happy Meals or can be purchased with regular menu items.
