000651 Dominick's Clarifies Packerland Beef Recall

June 19, 2000

Oak Brook, IL., - Packerland Packing Co., Inc., a Green Bay, Wisconsin firm is voluntarily recalling approximately 196,000 pounds of ground beef products that may be contaminated with E.coli 0157:H7. Dominick's has been notified that it received product that is part of this recall.

Neither Packerland nor Dominick's received any notice of illness. However, Dominick's first concern is the health and safety of its customers. Out of an abundance of caution, if consumers purchased Dominick's ground beef labeled with the following information, the product may be returned to a local store for a full refund:

Not less than 80% lean ground beef dated from May 25 through June 7, 2000

Not less than 90% lean ground beef dated from May 25 through June 7, 2000

Not less than 95% lean ground sirloin dated from May 25 through June 7, 2000

As always, to remind consumers, thorough cooking kills harmful bacteria, including E.coli 0157:H7. Ground beef should be cooked to 160 degrees Fahrenheit in the center, or until the juices run clear. Checking temperature with a meat thermometer is recommended.
