000601 North Carolina Packer Recalling Franks

June 7, 2000

Washington - Curtis Packing Co. of Greensboro, NC, is recalling 15,000 pounds of its Curtis and Beef Master frankfurters that may be contaminated with potentially lethal Listeria monocytogenes, the Agriculture Department said Monday.

The franks, whose packages bear a sell-by date of JUL03 and “Est. 2642” inside the USDA inspection seal, were produced on May 4 and distributed to stores in Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Alabama, Tennessee and Florida.

Consumption of food contaminated by Listeria can cause listeriosis, an uncommon but potentially fatal disease, but USDA said it has received no reports of illness from the Curtis products. Consumers were advised to return the products to the store where purchased.

The problem was discovered through routine microbiological sampling by the Georgia Department of Agriculture.
