000527 Electronically Pasteurized Hamburger Sales Expand

May 28, 2000

San Diego, CA - The Titan Corporation's wholly-owned subsidiary, SureBeam Corporation, and the Minnesota-based Huisken Meats announced that more than 250 stores in five states will now be carrying SureBeam electronically pasteurized hamburgers.

Titan's SureBeam electronic pasteurization system kills harmful bacteria instantly, enhancing a food's quality and extending its shelf life without changing its taste or texture. Similar to a microwave oven, the SureBeam system uses ordinary electricity as its energy source to pasteurize food after it has been processed and packaged.

The product was originally launched on May 16 in 84 supermarkets in the greater Minneapolis/St. Paul area, but within a day that number grew to over 100. The number continued to grow to over 150 stores in less than a week's time, expanding distribution beyond the Twin Cities region.

“Within the next few days, Huisken's electronically pasteurized hamburgers will be in over 250 retail stores in five states,” said Cliff Albertson, Sales Manager for Huisken Meats. “Consumer demand and response has been tremendous. Our customers have expressed great satisfaction with our product. Some stores -- actually half of the stores in one supermarket group -- were reordering the day after initial delivery.”

“This consumer response is just the tip of the iceberg,” said Larry A. Oberkfell, SureBeam's President and CEO. “In just a few weeks, consumers across almost every state in the union will have the opportunity to choose and buy electronically pasteurized products. For the first time, consumers will have the choice of purchasing for their families a ground beef product they know in advance to be free from the threat of harmful bacteria.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control, food-borne diseases strike 76 million Americans annually, leading to more than 5,000 deaths -- predominately among children and the elderly. The revolutionary SureBeam technology is designed to decrease the incidence of these illnesses. “Every day we needlessly waste at getting this product out to consumers is another day that we allow people to be needlessly injured,” said Dr. Michael Osterholm, Ph.D., a noted Minnesota epidemiologist and long-time advocate for food safety during a ceremony commemorating the launch.

Huisken Beef Patties are the first premium beef products in the U.S. to be electronically pasteurized using SureBeam technology to eliminate the threat of harmful food-borne pathogens such as E.Coli, Listeria, Campylobacter, and Salmonella.
