000410 USDA Subsidizes Poultry Meat to Middle East

April 8, 2000

Washington - USDA said it would subsidize the sale of 300 tonnes of frozen poultry meat to the Middle East.

The department said it accepted the bid from Tyson Foods Inc. for subsidies through the Export Enhancement Program.

The subsidies averaged $650 per tonne.

Under the program, exporters are awarded a bonus from the government if they lower their prices to make a sale to a targeted country. Sales must be made at market prices, based on USDA assessment.

Some 18,299 tonnes of poultry meat remained available to the Middle East region under EEP.
