000356 Gwaltney Recalls Mislabeled Franks

March 18, 2000

Washington - A Virginia meatpacker, Gwaltney of Smithfield Ltd., voluntarily recalled 1,500 pounds (680 kg) of mislabeled franks distributed to stores in Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and Pennsylvania.

The packages were labeled as beef franks but were actually chicken and pork, USDA said. The problem was discovered when grocery workers noticed the packages contained eight franks instead of the usual 10.

Involved in the recall were 16-ounce (454-gram) packages of “Finast beef franks” that contained only eight franks. Each package bears “4341” in the Agriculture Department inspection seal, has a package code of 18JAJ and a use-by date of May 8. The franks were produced on Feb. 28.

Consumers were urged to return the franks to stores where they were purchased.

Gwaltney of Smithfield is based in Portsmouth, Virginia.
